I don't know why people are trying to make this so complicated, its really not. If you want to hit the $2,500 in a single register visit, go for it, but personally I think it is a bit confusing for cashiers.
My personal method of choice, have cashier swipe redbird #1, #2, and #3 each for $1,000 (the last being an odd number, like 998.78) and pay. Gauging their personality and busyness, repeat. Come back another day and do the same, then come back a third day and only do the rotation once.
No dealing with 'overloading', no confusion on doing the same card multiple times, just simple and easy to explain.
