Downtown hotels have emerged; which makes sense. That's where the action is these days. Back in 2007/2008, the trend of people doing business in midtown wanting to stay in Chelsea/Soho/Flatiron/etc. b/c of the better scene began and it's interesting how the market has filled that need with mostly off-brand hotels. It's refreshing.
Though midtown hotels are still strong: FS RCCP, MO still stand-out.
And while it is refreshing to see the rise of smaller names and it may not be 'in' to like the FSNY or RCCP for one reason or another (most notably that douchey resistance to most anything in a chain), dont let anyone tell you they're down to below luxury standards here in late 2014. They're both excellent hotels.
Do not hesitate staying at either if their location suits your needs.
