Yes...get in touch with the locals! See the link to the Consolidated ANC Meet-Up Thread in my signature. You'll see from that thread that they're a very hospitable group. I only wish I still lived there so I could hang out, too!
One of the locals (although I'm not sure if he's in ANC this weekend) does a bit of photography. Even if he's not, several people there can point you in the right direction for northern lights photography, though.

A friend always wanted to take me up in the winter and then slide down the snow-chute, but I prefer my hiking to be >32 degrees.
