I'd agree with The Points Guy: this card is designed to lure current US Barclaycard holders with a card that will work well after the merger with the same benefits. If he's correct, Barclays is "backing in" to a lucrative market only Citibank will have access to in the future (as sole supplier of AA branded cards post-merger).
