The hotel wants to charge you a night's room charges, for all of the rooms, as a no show. It's an easy way to make some money.

However, they should know that you'll have the email confirming the cancellation even if you failed to write down and keep the cancellation number. Also, this is the sort of thing that people would notice on their credit card bills, complain, and escalate.
