Of course, the price of a cash ticket on the PHX-SNA nonstop is only $72.10/person, so you're only getting about 1.5 cents per Avios. But with the award ticket, you can at least switch to PHX-SAN pretty cheaply if award seats subsequently open up on
that flight.
