I am confused about the wording of the SDC rules.

The rules say that one can "request a change up to 24 hours prior to the departure time of your original flight." Does this mean that we can SDC *before* check-in, but not after? I had always thought that one did a same day confirmed change on the same day.

An example. I am flying, in 36 hours, LGA-XXX. If the same fare class is available, can I call now and request a change to a different flight, from LGA-XXX on that same day?

Would this not, effectively, allow one to purchase a less expensive ticket AAA-BBB-CCC, and re-route themselves AAA-CCC on a ticket that would normally be more expensive? Perhaps I am just reading things incorrectly (?) and the rule only applies after check-in? Any clarification is appreciated.
