Yes, a phone call is required. Each property gets to load their inventory and they have the ability to encode min and max stay requirements. Many times I have found extending my stay by one night would get me a room but told nothing available for a shorter stay. If I really want to stay at that property, I will call and get the rez booked.
So far Marriott has only allowed mixing payment with cash & points calling it their Cash & Points program. Only issue is each night must be settled using only one payment method, cash or points. No ability to pay for a single night with a combination of cash and points.
