When you get a new card, you get sent the card in one envelope and a random PIN in a second envelope. The PIN envelope has security features and you usually have to peel a secure flap open and put the flap over a white surface to reveal the PIN. Tamper proof etc.

You then go to any ATM and change the PIN on the card to one you prefer. This PIN is written to the local chip by the ATM.

For each card type (debit, credit, charge) the ATM PIN and purchase PIN are always the same i.e. you can withdraw cash from an ATM with an AMEX card and use the same PIN to charge goods to the card in a store.

If you want to change the PIN at a a later date, again, go to any ATM, enter your current PIN, select 'Change PIN' and enter new PIN. That's it.
Good to know
But Barclays US is doing pin changes online and is written on the chip when doing an" in person" transaction with a live person
