On the a340 you are probably better off with the pair of 2.
On a 747 10F confuguration - and depending how much you want to talk for the whole flight - I think the better seats are window seats. You can join each other for dinner on the guest seat. The pairs of seats on the 10F are a bit stuck out in the middle of the cabin.
On the 9F 'suites' version, the pair of seats in the centre is probably ok - not as exposed.
