Personally, we are more amused when displaying 5-6 red wines, at least ONE red Bordeaux ("better old world value") is found among them.

We appreciate your tolerance on that. Perhaps a way to satisfy all tastes could be an alternative to 5-6 reds of unknown new world value, 3-4 of these and 2 of known old world value?
Today, we were entertained, although not amused to the level of making notes for the wine shop, by a 2009 Newton Johnson Full Stop Rock (Syrah/Grenache/Mourvedre), which, according to Googled reports, seems to be a rather good low-cost new world alternative to a red Rhone. But better value (for money)? Not so sure.
