So I did get a call back from Amex about this. They connected me to HHonors to correct the problem. After a moderately lengthy hold, the agent told me she had submitted the request for HH Gold status and that I should receive it in 10 days.
I never received a call or email, but 10 days later I checked my account and it had indeed been upgraded to Gold.
I recently received my card and it says I'm Gold through March 201

^ to Amex and Hilton for (eventually) fixing the problem.
Lucky...I've tried multiple emails and instant message chat with Hilton HHonors and AMEX Platinum and keep getting the run around...by the time my account gets upgraded to Gold, it will be time for it to expire...what a hassle
