Arriving in Shinjuku by Narita Express

JR Shinjuku station map (Click here for PDF file)

Most people will be passing through Shinjuku Station (新宿駅) at some point during the Do. Whether arriving on Narita Express, or Keisei from NRT then the Yamanote Line, or on a subway line, it will be difficult to avoid Shinjuku Station. If you are staying near Shinjuku and going on day trips to Disneyland, Kamakura or Hakone, you will be setting off from Shinjuku Station.

This is how Wikipedia describes the station: "Serving as the main connecting hub for rail traffic between central Tokyo and its western suburbs on inter-city rail, commuter rail, and metro lines, the station was used by an average of 3.64 million people per day in 2007, making it, by far, the world's busiest transport hub (and registered as such with Guinness World Records). The station has 36 platforms. Including an underground arcade, there are well over 200 exits."

The map above shows only the JR part of Shinjuku Station.

Narita Express (N'EX) platforms (5 & 6) at Shinjuku are at the southern end of the station somewhat detached from the rest and seems closer to Yoyogi which is the next station on the Yamanote and Sobu Lines than to the main part of Shinjuku Station. The easiest way to get out of the station when arriving on Narita Express is to go up the escalator half-way down the platform, turn left and to follow the signs for the 'Southern Terrace Exit". The exit is called 'サザンテラス口' or 'Sazan Terasu-guchi' in Japanese. Don't follow other passengers who are likely to walk in the direction of travel, and go down an escalator into the labyrinth of Shinjuku Station from which you will spend a long time to escape.

A few hotels including the Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku and the Century Southern Tower are only a few minutes' walk from the Southern Terrace Exit. If you turn left as you come out of the Southern Terrace Exit and keep walking you will eventually come to the Park Hyatt. The Hyatt Regency and the Hilton are further away but they are all within one mile of the eixt. There is a convenient taxi stand just outside the exit for those who prefer not to walk.
