4L/22R is going to be closed through June 1, and then operating at reduced capacity through June 15. It will be fully operational through the peak summer months and then closed one final time from September 20 through 30.

When the project is complete, there will be new high-speed exits to get airplanes off the runway faster, new LED lighting and the entire length will be resurfaced. Ultimately this should allow the airport to handle arriving traffic more efficiently.

EWR can function well when visual meteorological conditions prevail as departing traffic will use 4R/22L and arrivals can be handled on 11/29. However, because 29 does not have an ILS/DME, approaches under instrument conditions must be handled on 4R/22L, making EWR effectively a single-runway airport.
