i don't see why they won't allow a transfer to be counted as a stopover. it's just a stopover that's under 24 hours, and you're willing to pay for it!
i've done it before, at least once or twice, but i can't locate the itinerary (have been combing through my mailbox for archived e-tickets ...)
are you calling the English line? call the Cantonese number (press 2 for language) - and then talk to the agents in English. i doubt the *highly skilled* English hotline agents are able to manage the stopover/transfer thing.
