I had an annoying experience returning to the airport earlier this week. Meter showed THB 195, which was fairly accurate IMHO. I handed him 200 and was going to tip another 30 or so (change I had in my pocket). "No, 300," he said. I pointed at the meter and he said something about "airport charge."
I paid him the 300; I wasn't even sure how to resolve it. All of the other taxis I took during the week had been fine and didn't attempt any sort of shenanigans.
