It's not...HA works with everyone. You can earn and redeem on HA from DL, AA, UA, AS and VS (I think also from QF, JL, NH and a few others also).
It's unlikely for HA to go into any alliance, as it is better off working with everyone, and is growing at a massive pace adding a new int'l route or two every quarter for the last few years.
If you want to book HA int'l flights, then you can use your AA miles to book HNL-SYD, HNL-SDJ, HNL-CTS, etc., etc. AA doesn't block redemption on any HA int'l flight, to the best of my knowledge. (Not sure about others.) And, you can easily book it right online on
www.aa.com.
