Yes, we need props and RJs to smaller destinations. But, we don't need them between large cities. There is a simple solution: reduce frequency and upguage on such routes, freeing RJ pilots to work on the smaller routes.
But how else will UA charge $1k+ from EWR to any major Rust Belt city?
