I fly primarily on United with the family as well, and the United Explorer has definitely saved us money on baggage fees.

Another option you might look into is the Economy Plus subscription on United which allows you to choose Plus seats at the time of booking but if you're only traveling 3-4 times a year the cost doesn't make economic sense.
