With regards to the second hand planes, I assume BA engineering will do a full assessment of the maintenance history of each plane before they are handed over much as we would with a second hand car. Airlines have to keep very detailed maintenance logs that should list each and every part replaced and confirmation that all the mandatory checks have been carried out.
