Roundtrip inside of a Roundtrip

Hi,

I recently was told by my travel agency that the following is not allowed by airlines (specifically Delta in this incident)

I first purchased the following trip:

BOS-GRU leave 1/7/14
GRU-BOS return 6/24/14

This week, I had to make an emergency trip back to the US, so I went to purchase the following ticket:

GRU-SAV leave 1/18/14
SAV-GRU return 1/26/14

My travel agency cancelled my return trip above (GRU-BOS 6/24) because they said the inside roundtrip was not allowed and that if delta found it they would cancel whichever trip they deemed that was "not allowed"

I personally have done this plenty of times domestically in the US and never had an issue, I am not sure why the airlines would have a problem with this, in this trip I was not even going to the same destination (BOS).

Can anyone clarify this?

Thanks in advance!
