Technically, you are required to comply with an FA's instruction while on the plane. Even with the new electronic device policies, it ultimately comes down to complying with FA instructions. So you were correct not to get combative with her saying that she was in the wrong.
You only have to comply with instructions pertaining to safety and regulations. If she told me to punch you in the face I could legally refuse. However, in this case, she may have thought she was demanding the OP comply with a regulation.
