When it comes to desert national parks, I'd not rate Joshua Tree that highly. I wouldn't allocate more than a day.

In my book, Death Valley wins hands down -- and the season starts in November. The only problem would be in getting a room if your visit happened to coincide with the annual Death Valley Encampment. Note there are no chain hotels there and gas/food are expensive -- but it's really worth it.
