I'm going to be driving from Lugano through to near Martigny next month. Last time I did this, in the opposite direction, I used the Simplon Pass and took a ferry across alike Maggiore. Beatful. This time I'm thinking I'll take the Gotthard Pass.

What are the drive times taking the open mountain road compared to the tunnel?

I'd be leaving Lugano just before 5pm. Is it worth taking the long route that late in the day?
