whats the deal; why the hate for these planes? I just flew on an MD88 or MD90 (can't remember which) to NYC from MSP on Monday. It looked extremely new and it was comfortable. The only beef I had with it was that the EC seat that I was in didn't recline AT ALL (unless you count the 1/4" movement it did when I tried). All of the seats in this row did it too (I was in the last row of EC). It was 10AM though and I was refreshed so I didnt bother.
