Absolutely agree with the above. I can think of no good or even plausible explanation for why they don't announce what the choice is beforehand, other than total disdain for the passengers by the FAs.
Incidentally, I do think that the Y food has improved a little in the last year - I've had a couple of quite tasty main courses recently.
