It seems like a lot of questions are being repeated in various threads. Many things just can't be answered yet and won't be for months. Here's a summary as I understand it:

  • Awards and paid tickets currently booked with US or AA will be honored
  • US members can continue to book Star Alliance awards for some time
  • AA and US elite status is unchanged
  • AA and US programs remain separate
  • AA lifetime status is unchanged
  • All miles will be preserved

Likely to happen within several months:
  • Miles will be transferrable between AA and US accounts
  • Possible status match or combined EQM
  • Lifetime status will be preserved

Probably within a year:
  • New airline will be in oneworld not Star Alliance
  • Program will be AAdvantage
  • Expected combined lounge programs
  • EQM from each program combined
  • US leaves Star Alliance no earlier than August (assuming 6 month notice)

Speculation on other changes at unknown time:
  • Unknown when upgrade instruments are interchangeable between programs
  • Unknown whether SWU and upgrade policies change
  • Likely continued use of SABRE
  • Expect to combine lifetime miles from both programs
  • Expect DOJ merger approval (consensus)
  • Unknown whether 75k elite level exists
  • Unknown whether lifetime platinum becomes 50k or 75k level
  • Unknown whether bonus miles change for elite levels (some claim no elite program changes to be announced until after DOJ approval)
  • Unknown whether award redemption charts change
  • Unknown last day to book Star Alliance award with travel date being up to 330 days from booking
  • Unknown when Star Alliance awards can no longer be modified (in the past when an AA partner left there was sometimes a 6-month grace period past last ticketing date, sometimes none)
  • Other non-alliance partnerships such as JetBlue are expected to continue
  • Unknown status of AAirpass
  • Unknown changes to affiliated credit cards; expect Citi to win
  • Unknown increase or decrease in service through various hubs
  • Speculation of Asia expansion and possible Asia hub
  • Other programs may poach with offers of new status matches
