I personally like to have another later flight leave and get there before the flight I am trying to catch. That way, if there is a mechanical on my flight, I have a shot of jumping on the next plane and still making it. That's how I booked DTW to LAX, before MEL, even though it was the same PNR.
Maybe I'm paranoid, but I didn't want to miss that flight, which would have really messed up the every other day flights to New Zealand.
