2-4-2 is standard for economy on the upper deck. They do have side bins a la 747 upper deck otherwise it's no different to downstairs. Possibly more cramped as there are gates to close off the stairs in flight.
Wouldn't it be less cramped if it's 2-3-2 upper deck then for WT? And a 2 is nearly always more comfortable than a 3 or 4.
Don't like the sound of 3-3-3 on the 787.
