Last time I was on one of these (MHT-EWR), I traded my assigned 2A with the pax in 3B so that I could sit with my wife in 3C, and I could not for the life of me tell whether the passenger in 3B thought she had gotten a raw deal.

My seat didn't recline and we had a tough time finding overhead storage space for our bags, so I think on balance the pax we traded with came out ahead.
