Unlike DL, UA has always been very transparent on things like that and always provided advanced notice on any changes so i don't believe they would quietly sneak this in.
BTW a few years back i booked G-fare on ual site which was supposedly reserved for some unusual cases and not oped to public. Took quite a bit of time to force an upgrade on it and get miles credited. UA admitted a glitch back then.
