BTW, I know people who have done the same for elderly parents who are early-stage dementia, to ensure a comfortable travel experience. The actual process doesn't have to be confined to minors.
Thanks camachinist (are you really a CAM Machinist? Not many of those left in the USA...).

$99 seems like a no brainer to me, and I will be paying this fee for two upcoming trips where no parental guidance will be involved... I am calling UA shortly, and will report back here if any additional useful info.

I sat next to a UM not that long ago. They were hungry, but did not have a credit card. So I bought the snack box for them.
