Recently returned from DC and had a fabulous stay at the Fairfax on Embassy Row. The Staff were absolutely wonderful and made us feel welcome. The hotel is spotless and in a great location, close to the metro as well as Dupont Circle which has many restaurants from which to choose. I definitely recommend this hotel for a DC stay. There are others that are closer to the Mall, where the museums are located, but we found the subway easy to use.
I think I stayed here before it became a Starwood. It's a great neighborhood, central but still away from most of the tourist crowds and somewhat elegant with great restaurants nearby. Indeed, Metro is very convenient and easy to use, but watch out for summer weekend track work delays and diversions to buses.
