To answer your last question - No, going on an empty stomach is generally a bad idea. Pay the terminal sbarro a visit 1-2 hours prior to the flight.
Some ULH flights on EK tend to have some snacks (candy bars, chips) around the galley area, you can literally walk in and grab something to eat. That said, it doesn't hurt to bring something with you.
