I was traveling to Budapest from O'Hare in the 90s on LH (via FRA) and went to work, took the subway to ORD around 2 hours before flight time and realized my passport was at home. Jumped in a cab (during rush hour) who zoomed back to my home, had to fill up his gas tank and got me back to ORD with about 20 minutes to spare. In the pre 9/11 days the kind GAs rushed me through and got me on the plane in minutes. I now carry my passport for a day or two before any international flights...
