We're all different and have different needs/preferences but that's my 2 cents.
I agree with IAHTraveler here, I'd also take the '13 Taurus over the 3-series (although I'd like to try the '13 BMW 3-series with the turbo-4). I previously rented a 2011/12 BMW 3-series and hated it. The seats were uncomfortable and my back was aching after just a four hour drive. The interior was cheap and interior cabin volume tiny.
I'd rather take a Ford Focus over a 2011/12 BMW 3-series, much more comfortable seats.
