For the record this problem appears to be solved. I e-mailed technical support on the 15th and only got a cookie cutter response that some reservations can't be viewed on thirifty.com (as if after 30-35 rentals a year since 2006 I'm new at this...). When I replied that, no, I had in fact booked it at thrifty.com, they never bothered to reply.

On a whim I tried my confirmation that I needed to cancel and it worked, and the res is now cancelled. I didn't need them authing my credit card in Toronto for a car I had no intention of retrieving.
