A couple of years ago I was in the middle of a trip when my friends' ambulatory petri dishes (18-month old twins) gave me their cold/flu/whatever. By the time I got to the airport I realized I needed to go home, not the next leg of my trip.

The UAL customer service rep at IAD listened to the story, took one look at me, and refunded my non-refundable fare for the next leg of my journey and put me on the next flight to Denver.

And then, as I was walking away, wiped down anything I could have touched or breathed on with sani-wipes..

So, in this case she made the decision that it was better to get me home rather than continue to travel while sick. I feel for the poor people on the flight to Denver, if any of them got sick, but I sure appreciated it. I was sick in bed for a week once I arrived home.
