This is very scary as I will be traveling with my 2.5 year old daughter soon and don't want to beg fellow passengers to sort out a mess wholly created by UA.
Maybe time to alert the media and perhaps DOT.
Free upgrades are nice but it is not appropriate to split parents from children without consent and worse if there is no way to prevent the system from doing it without permission.
Maybe time to eliminate UDU. This doesn't happen on airlines where you must request an upgrade and pay with cash, miles or stickers.
