I suspect that if one showed their boarding pass to the security agent by the carousel escalator, that you could stay airside, but I've never known for sure.
I flew YWG-YQR-YYC and there was no announcement when we arrived at YQR about what connecting passengers were to do. There was about 4 of us. So I followed the heard and headed down long corridor towards escalator. I knew this was going to take me outside of the secure area so before proceeding I asked a CATSA guy who redirected me back towards the gate where I waited until AC agent arrived and opened the sliding doors to let me in. Not very user-friendly and not marked at all.
