When I fly TPE-NRT on UA, security is waiting by that boarding lounge too, so it's a problem regardless of your destination when flying a US airline.
Because it is on a USA based airline. I flew NRT-LAX last month on NH and there was no such security farce. Folks were quite brazenly open about carrying their super-dangerous bottles of liquid on board.
