since you said you want to see as many of the historical sites as possible, I assume you'd be satisfied with quick visits on each place. In that case the itineraries proposed in this thread are good.
But if you are one of those to enjoy a good time on each place, observing details, reading descriptions of each building or art, etc.. then I'd suggest just to do GW and Forbidden city, or Summer Palace and Forbidden city..
