You may wish to avoid or research the fact that many LH tickets book into 50% mile categories if this is a factor.

Another option for an interesting stopover is a revenue ticket UA to Brazil, then a second ticket to JNB on TAM. Aircraft not as nice but you get a stop in Brazil. I have seen examples on this forum for two separate tickets for about the same price as one through Europe.
The GRU to JNB would be on SA and not TAM.

Going out the EWR to JNB via Europe will leave you a long layover in either LHR (UA/CO connecting to SA), MUC (UA/CO, LH connecting to SA), FRA (UA/CO, LH connecting to LH,SA), or ZRH (UA/CO, LX connecting to LX). I have done both LHR and FRA but I have lounge access which makes it a little more tolerable. I am going via ZRH in May.

Would this be in Y, C, or F? Unless you want a layover in Europe the easiest is EWR-IAD-JNB (stop in DKR but you stay on the plane) or going to JFK opens up JFK-JNB and other *A options.
