America West Continues Trend of Operational Leadership-Airline Remains Industry Leader in On-Time Performance System-wide And in Its Phoenix Hub
Body: PHOENIX, Jul 1, 2002 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- America West's (NYSE: AWA) system-wide on-time performance for May 2002 was an industry leading 87.7 percent as reported today in the Department of Transportation's monthly Air Travel Consumer Report, a 14 percent improvement over the 77.0 percent reported in May 2001. Through the first five months of 2002, America West is first among all major airlines in on-time performance. The airline was also among the industry leaders in completion factor. For May, America West's percentage of cancelled flights was only 0.4 percent, an 80 percent decrease from May 2001.
"The hard work and dedication of our employees has once again resulted in industry leading operational performance and outstanding service to our customers," said Jeff McClelland, executive vice president, operations.

Additionally, America West reported 2.95 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers, a 10 percent improvement over May 2001, and 11 percent better than the industry average of 3.32. As a result of these improvements, customer complaints to the DOT declined by nearly 50 percent from 2.69 per 100,000 passengers in May 2001 to 1.42 in May 2002.

At Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, where America West is the leading carrier and operates nearly 75 percent of all of its flights, the airline's on-time arrival percentage was 90.7 percent, up from 85.2 percent in May 2001, ranking it first among major carriers serving Sky Harbor for the seventh month in a row.
