My comment concerns the ditching of SWUs / GPUS and providing domestic stuff of little or no value to the UA international / overseas flier.

Exactly. At least offer a choice to elect such benefits. In today's world of customization and customer-specific solutions not a hard thing to do. Hotel loyalty programs are already doing it, as rightfully mentioned elsewhere.
Offering some GPUs would be highly valued by & motivating for overseas UA folks, which at least at the 3MM & 4MM level would be appropriate and a smart business decision on UAs part.
