Sure it is. If you normally fly P.S. E+, then this is an upgrade.
But if you're eliminating 1/3 of the premium seats, and making the better seats more difficult to access, the net effect is that some of the same customers who used to sit in UA J may now be sitting in E+. Hence, a downgrade.
It all depends on perspective.
Not sure what you're talking about here -- we're talking about P.S., which is certainly not sardine-like. Have you ever flown P.S. in Row 9?

Yes, the people who would be using CR1s or miles to upgrade. The airline doesn't get money off of that.
I wasn't talking about PS J seats there, I was talking about the threads where people ask "LH or UA J?" and the UA people say "fly UA! It's lie flat!", even though it's packed like sardines.
