I think it could be asking for trouble. A great majority consider Labor Day weekend as the last "summer" weekend because their summer rentals or summer shares have ended or because school starts afterwards. September is actually the best month at the beach because the crowds are gone.
That said, I would allow at least 3 hours to get to LGA.
