Hawaiian turned back flight
Last night we had the misfortune of a a DC10 that was smelling of electrical smoke 2 hours over the Pacific Ocean into Hawaiian AL flight #26 from HNL to PDX. It was my first and hopefully only experience of watching fuel being dumped prior to landing in HNL. The FAs said that was standard proceedure to dump fuel prior to landing. I was not so sure. What do FTers think?
We had flown for about 4hours at the time of the unscheduled landing. I did notice the yellow crash response truck present with its lights aglow. All was fine with a smooth landing. The pilots to their credit were totally professional and very conservative in my opinion. I was impressed. I may be a frequent flier but still remain slightly white knuckled when it comes to trouble in an airplane.
Also to the credit of Hawaiian Air they did have another DC10 waiting for us when we arrived. Then we had to wait for a crew. We left about 5.5 hours late. For this inconvience that got us home at 0318am instead of 2145pm. We received free headsets, free beer or wine (no thanks make mine a scotch) on the second flight. When we arrived in PDX they hand out a HA coupon packet for $200.00 off a fare of 550... a 10 minute phone card and a free headset/drink coupon for another flight. I was satisfied enough I guess but very glad to be home... even if I didn't get another lovely night in Hawaii.
