Based on my experience, that would be entirely at your discretion.
I did not cancel the first card before completing the second app, due to the fact that I'd gotten the first card maybe 5 weeks prior and didn't want to possibly invite any trouble with the points I'd literally
just earned.
Either way, it would seem that cancelling is not a necessary step here.
