The CC rental car coverage is SECONDARY for US domestic rental. The primary always is your own car insurance policy. However the CC coverage still pays for the deductible should your claim is big enough to file with your own car policy - and be prepared your premium will go up on next renewal...
If you do not have comprehensive coverage on your own car policy, then the CC coverage becomes PRIMARY even domestically.
International rentals the CC coverage is Primary while your own car policy covers NOTHING.
I know for a fact and the "Guide to Benefits" says so that rental car coverage is Primary even for domestic car rentals. This is why I like using this card for car rentals.

Auto Rental CDW is primary coverage. In other words, you do not have to claim payment from any source of insurance before receiving coverage under this benefit.
